It’s Memorial Day in the United States. Remembrance Day in the UK and Canada. Both are designed to honor and remember those brave soldiers who died fighting for our freedom. The holiday is observed on the last Monday in May in America and each Nov. 11 in the UK and Canada. (1, 2)
History of Memorial Day
Memorial Day is a time to visit cemeteries to decorate the graves of their departed soldiers. In fact, it originally was known as Decoration Day for that reason.
The Civil War had ended and America was looking for a way to heal. That was the impetus for the holiday. It evolved to commemorate all who died in the line of duty. (3)
Here’s how General John A. Logan, leader of the Northern Civil War Veterans, described the original intent:
“The 30th of May, 1868, is designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers, or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village and hamlet churchyard in the land,” General Logan proposed. (3)
Commemorating the Fallen
Many communities, large and small, hold parades and the American flag is flown at half-mast from dawn until noon.
Canadians wear red poppies on their clothes to symbolize the memory of the soldiers. (4)
